SA AIA Announces the Launch of the LOTC Practitioner Chapter

27 Nov 2024

A New Era for Learning Outside the Classroom Professionals

South Africa, [22 November 2024] – The South African Adventure Industry Association (SA AIA) is proud to announce the establishment of the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOTC) Practitioner Chapter, a dedicated initiative designed to support and elevate the professionals who make outdoor experiential learning possible. This marks an important milestone for the adventure and outdoor education sector as we work together to address the unique needs and challenges faced by facilitators, practitioners, and educators in the LOTC space.

We are pleased to appoint Omolemo Tlhabane, a respected LOTC Practitioner, as the Acting Chairperson of this chapter. Omolemo also serves on our National Executive Committee (NEC), representing the interests of the LOTC Professional.

The LOTC Practitioner Chapter aims to provide a platform where professionals working in adventure-based experiential learning (ABEL), adventure-based learning (ABL), and other LOTC-focused fields can unite under a common banner. By fostering collaboration and advocacy, the chapter is committed to ensuring these practitioners are empowered, recognized, and equipped with the tools necessary for success in this dynamic and impactful industry.

Why the LOTC Practitioner Chapter is Needed

Professionals in the LOTC sector play a vital role in shaping meaningful learning experiences for schools, corporate teams, and other groups. However, many of these professionals face significant challenges, including:

·       A lack of standardized payment practices and career growth opportunities.

·       Barriers to accessible and affordable upskilling and training.

·       Disconnects between ground-level teams and management.

·       Limited logistical and legal support from employers and venues.

·       Insufficient representation and advocacy for their rights and needs.

The LOTC Practitioner Chapter is committed to addressing these issues by providing a unified voice, establishing ethical standards, and promoting professional development to elevate the sector as a whole.

What the Chapter Will Do

This chapter will act as a resource and representative body for LOTC professionals, focusing on:

·       Standardizing Workplace Practices: Defining facilitator roles, advocating for fair pay, and fostering career growth opportunities.

·       Training and Accessibility: Collaborating on creating inclusive and accessible training programmes, addressing logistical challenges, and promoting diversity in facilitation.

·       Professional Development: Establishing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) systems and structured career progression models.

·       Industry Representation: Advocating for the needs of facilitators, building relationships with stakeholders, and providing toolkits for best practices.

·       Diversity and Inclusivity: Breaking down cultural and language barriers through workshops and partnerships.

Call to Action

The inaugural meeting of the LOTC Practitioner Chapter took place on November 15, 2024 and was a significant first step in addressing the needs of the sector. We invite all professionals in the LOTC, ABL, and ABEL sectors to join us in building a stronger, more supportive community.

SA AIA is committed to leading this initiative in collaboration with our members and stakeholders to ensure the voices of LOTC professionals are heard, respected, and acted upon.
